Inspection of reinforced concrete with GPR

The inspection of reinforced concrete with GPR is a very important aid in renovation or new construction projects.

The probability of needing to cut or drill a reinforced concrete slab is high. There is an inherent risk of striking rebar, electrical or communication conduit, and post-tensioning cables during the cutting, coring, or drilling process. Such mistakes can be costly, wreak havoc on your schedule and create a safety hazard for your employees.

We can quickly respond to requests for geo-radar scanning services and execute a reinforced concrete inspection. If you have already a last-minute unforeseen events, the option of a concrete scan (concrete mapping) is your best solution.

The end result is a professional, accurate and timely scan. The peace of mind you seek to mitigate risk and keep your employees safe.

Concrete Inspection Applications

Detection of reinforcement in concrete

At GPR3D we are able to detect and map concrete reinforcements using geo-radar methodologies. This way it is possible to easily locate post-tensioned reinforcement and cables within a slab of concrete.

By means of a reinforced concrete inspection the positions of steel bars are marked directly on the study surface. In this way, a safe and efficient perforation is achieved whilst the integrity and structure are preserved. This of course reduces the need for patches and other repairs.

Our clients can benefit from conducting perforations without accidents, injuries or delays to work schedule. Geo-radar scanning is also useful in projects that involve electrical installations, plumbing, fire protection systems, drains and other such systems.

Detection of voids and cavities in concrete

The detection of voids and cavities in concrete is essential for the safety of everyone. With our extensive experience we have the ability to locate hidden voids below the surface of concrete and asphalt. These voids occur with time as a result of compaction, pipe bursts and erosion. Unfortunately, these types of issue are often undetectable at the surface level.

A concrete inspection by GPR can help our clients locate these problematic areas and more importantly, allow them to remediate and so avoid landslips.

Location of power lines in concrete

The location of electrical wiring is a basic need in today´s world. Upon excavating in commercial and industrial premises, the precise detection of the electrical infrastructure is essential in order to ensure the safety of employees, power cuts and the resulting, often costly damage.

At GPR3D we offer two specific and different scanning services: the scanning of structural concrete slabs and the inspection for utilities in ground-laid concrete.

The first case involves the detection of cabling and reinforcements without the need to perforate the slabs.

The second case is the study of concrete poured directly onto the ground. Typically, this requires GPR scanning of a ditch prior to the cutting of the concrete in order to install the required infrastructure, be it drainage, water supply or similar.

Evaluating a concrete slab

Following the evaluation of a slab of concrete we are able to characterise the study area. Crucial to this is the scanning process, during which it is determined what lies within the concrete structure (concrete mapping). This includes the measurement of the density of the concrete. It also includes the determination of the type and extent of reinforcement, its spacing and its elevation within the concrete.

With this extensive and reasoned evaluation of the concrete we help our clients and their teams to understand the composition of the concrete they encounter.
