Structural inspection course with high-frequency ground penetrating radar: acquisition, processing, and 3D interpretation in concrete
The gold standard in Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) for critical structures.
Drilling, cutting, or coring into pillars, walls, abutments, or bridge decks without accurate prior mapping is an unacceptable risk in modern engineering. A single mistake can sever an active post-tensioning cable and compromise the structural integrity of the entire site.
This comprehensive course trains you to use high-frequency Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) as a true X-ray scanner. Unlike basic training, this program covers the entire data lifecycle: we start with the physical fundamentals of electromagnetic waves in concrete, move on to the correct execution of on-site scans, and culminate in office work, mastering post-processing software to generate 3D models and irrefutable technical reports.
Methodology: A technical and analytical approach. We combine the theory of high-frequency antennas with real field scenarios (grid scans and line scans). In the office module, you will work with complex datasets to learn how to clean the signal, calculate the dielectric constant of concrete, and visually separate passive reinforcement from critical conduits and internal defects (honeycombing, delamination).
What you will learn (course objectives)
-
✔ Theory applied to concrete: Understand how the GPR signal interacts with steel, plastic (PVC), moisture, and air voids.
-
✔ Error-free 2D and 3D acquisition: Sweeping techniques, grid alignment, antenna polarization control, and troubleshooting on irregular surfaces.
-
✔ Advanced signal processing: Use of specialized software to apply filters (background removal, dewow), gain adjustments, and migration (hyperbola collapse to determine exact diameter and depth).
-
✔ 3D structural interpretation: Generation of time-slices (horizontal and longitudinal cuts). You will learn to differentiate the first layer of mesh from the second, and to locate hidden post-tensioning tendons.
-
✔ Integration and deliverables: Exporting results to CAD/BIM formats and writing structural pathology technical reports ready for audit.
