Geophysics is a powerful tool, but only if you choose the right one.

In the world of civil engineering and geotechnics, it is a common mistake to request "GPR" for everything, or to invest in seismic campaigns that do not offer the necessary resolution. This course is designed for engineers, designers, and geotechnical managers who need a global and technical overview of the available tools.

This is not an equipment operation course, but one on strategy and applied physics. You will learn the principles, scope, and—most importantly—the limitations of each technique. The objective is that, upon completion, you will be able to draft precise technical specifications, evaluate subcontractor budgets, and decide which methodology will solve your specific problem (detecting cavities, defining bedrock, locating leaks, or characterizing fill).

What you will learn (Course Objectives)

  • ✔ The Geophysical Spectrum: Overview of electrical, electromagnetic, seismic, and gravimetric methods.

  • ✔ Applied Physics: Understand what physical property each method measures (wave velocity, resistivity, permittivity) and how it relates to geology.

  • ✔ Selection Criteria: GPR or Electrical Tomography? Seismic Refraction or MASW? Learn to choose based on depth and objective.

  • ✔ Scope and Limitations: Understand the trade-off between resolution and depth (Resolution vs. Depth).

  • ✔ Report Interpretation: How to read and validate the results delivered by geophysics companies.

Who is it for

  • Civil and Structural Engineers.

  • Geological and Geotechnical Engineers.

  • Project Directors and Site Managers.

  • Tendering departments that draft technical specifications.

Summary syllabus

  • Introduction to Geophysics in Civil Engineering: Myths and Realities.

  • Electromagnetic Methods: GPR (Ground Penetrating Radar) and FDEM. When do they fail?

  • Electrical Methods: Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) and VES.

  • Seismic Methods: Refraction, MASW, and Reflection. Dynamic moduli.

  • Microgravimetry: Detection of large cavities and density variations.

  • Case Studies: Selection of the optimal method for tunnels, foundations, and pathologies.
