Advanced course in 3D post-processing and interpretation of ground penetrating radar (GPR) and underground mapping
Turn raw data into accurate, BIM-ready 3D models.
Collecting data in the field with a ground penetrating radar is only half the job. The real difference between a basic operator and a utility mapping expert lies in the ability to process that information in the office. This advanced course is designed for professionals who already know the fundamentals of GPR and need to master post-processing software to solve complex scenarios.
Unlike field training, here we will get our hands dirty with the software. You will learn the "garbage in, garbage out" philosophy: how correct acquisition and the use of the right input formats are vital for processing success. From applying filters and gains to clean the 2D signal, to generating depth cuts (time-slices) and building 3D volumes.
Methodology: A 100% practical "office" approach. We will work with real datasets that present common challenges: noise, multiple layers, utility crossings, and complex terrain. You will learn to integrate GPR data with point clouds, GPS coordinates, and electromagnetic locator data to create a flawless final deliverable.
What you will learn (course objectives)
-
✔ Formats and optimal acquisition: Understand native file formats and how to design perfect acquisition grids to ensure error-free 3D rendering.
-
✔ Advanced 2D processing: Cleaning the raw signal. Mastery of filters (dewow, background removal), gain adjustments, migration, and precise velocity calculation (depth).
-
✔ 3D modeling and interpretation: Creation of time-slices (horizontal cuts) to visualize the underground network from above. Volume rendering and detection of complex geometries.
-
✔ Data integration: How to merge GPR data with RTK/GPS positioning, total stations, and paths obtained through electromagnetic locators.
-
✔ Export and deliverables: From screen to client. Exporting results to industry-standard formats (DXF, DWG, SHP) for integration into CAD, GIS, and BIM methodology environments.
